SUMMARY:Patterns in the Snow: a Tracking Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Classroom session \nHave you ever wondered what animals move through your yard when you’re not looking?  Have you ever looked at the tracks in your yard and wondered who made them and what they were doing at the time?  Snow provides us a yearly opportunity to learn more about our animal neighbors.  The track patterns left behind serve as our window into discovering:  Who left those tracks?  What were they doing?  Were they in a hurry?  Join local certified tracker Joe LaRue for a Thursday class and Saturday Field Session to unlock the secrets of these snowy riddles.

SUMMARY:Trout Stream Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Streams and riparian areas are dynamic\, and change dramatically over decades and centuries.  The last thirty years of research has shed light on the interconnected nature of streams and riparian areas\, documenting that riparian zones are indeed an integral part of stream ecosystems.  Much of that research has demonstrated the importance of wood in streams to fish habitat and nutrient cycling\, and emerging information on the role of light on the productivity of stream ecosystems.  Come learn about research from New Hampshire and beyond on fish habitat and instream wood\, and what we may expect in our streams in the coming decades as forests age.  As well as several stream restoration projects that use our knowledge of stream and riparian processes to help stream ecosystems become healthy again.

SUMMARY:New Hampshire's Declining Bird Population
DESCRIPTION:The September issue of the Journal Science\, included an article that highlighted a study showing an alarming decline in bird populations throughout North America.  Similar studies in Europe have found the same.  The report indicates a net population decline of 29% (about three billion birds) in North America since 1970.  Yes that’s billion\, with a “b”.  Iain MacLeod\, Executive Director of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center\, took a closer look at long term bird data in New Hampshire’s North Country and found similar declines.  Join Iain for an evening of exploring and explaining these trends and what they mean for the future of New Hampshire’s avian and greater wildlife populations.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Kyle Carey
DESCRIPTION:The Whitney Community Center Presents —  An Evening with Kyle Carey —‘Gaelic Americana’ singer-songwriter. \nPerforming at the Whitney Community Center\, 16 Black Mountain Rd\, Jackson\, N.H.–Friday\, February 28th at 7:00 p.m. \nKyle Carey’s unique trans-Atlantic fusion of music includes influences of the American Folk Anthology\, the Appalachian poetry of Louise McNeill\, and the traditional music of Ireland\, Cape Breton and Scotland. \nThe results are well described by Jeremy Searle of R2 Magazine—‘Kyle Carey is\, quite simply\, a delight. Drawing from both the American and British folk traditions\, her songs\, including some very fine originals\, are beautifully crafted and performed. She’s assured\, confident\, charming and irresistible.’ Kyle’s debut album ‘Monongah’\, produced by former Lùnasa guitarist Donogh Hennessy\, rose to number eight on the Folk DJ charts\, landing on a number of ‘Best of 2011’ lists by year’s end. \nHer original songs draw heavily from the American folk tradition\, while her fluency in Scottish Gaelic makes for her own brand of ‘Gaelic Americana’ music. Kyle’s sophomore release ‘North Star’ recorded in Scotland and produced by Solas founding member Seamus Egan was released in the fall of 2014 to widespread critical acclaim\, charting at #45 in the top 200 CDs of 2014—compiled by Folk DJs nationwide. \nHer fan-funded third album ‘The Art of Forgetting’\, produced by Dirk Powell\, features a cast of backing musicians which includes luminaries such as Rhiannon Giddens and John McCusker\, and was released in early 2018 on the World Music Network’s Riverboat Records label to wide-spread acclaim –landing on PopMatters ’20 Best Folk Albums of 2018’ list by year’s end. Having toured for five years on both sides of the Atlantic\, Kyle Carey is a unique and innovative artist not to be missed. \nShow begins at 7:00 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults\, $20 for a family.

SUMMARY:New England Bill Koch League Festival
DESCRIPTION:Pinkham Notch\, NH — The New England Bill Koch League (NEBKL) strives to introduce youngsters to the lifelong sport of cross-country skiing\, and all that it offers for recreational and social opportunities. The league promotes fitness and competitive challenges\, but its main goal is to create a fun environment where children develop a true love for the sport. Named after Bill Koch\, the first U.S. Olympic medalist in cross-country skiing\, the NEBKL is the largest cross-country ski program for children in the United States\, and is comprised of over 45 clubs throughout New England\, with well over 800 youth participants and adult leaders. Great Glen Trails has hosted a BKL club for more than 15 years\, led by Olympian and ski school director Sue Wemyss.\n\nThe highlight of the season—for kids and coaches\, alike—is the annual New England Bill Koch League Festival. For 2020\, the Festival is being hosted by Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center\, much to the delight of its employees and the local cross-country skiing community. This two-day event will begin on Saturday\, February 29\, with a full schedule of races being held throughout the weekend. In addition to the multiple categories of races\, the Festival will give kids a taste of ski jumping and biathlon\, as well as fun activities such as snow tubing\, obstacle courses\, radar runs\, ski tours\, snowman building and face painting.\n\nSpecial guests at this year’s NEBKL Festival include two-time Olympic cross-country skier Ida Sargent\, as well as the League’s namesake\, Bill Koch. Both have been an inspiration to the next generation of Nordic ski racers\, and will be available during the Festival for autographs and discussions.\n\nWhile most of the NEBKL clubs will be attending the Festival\, you don’t need to be a club member to participate. Registration is open to all kids in grades 1 through 8 who are looking for a fun weekend of winter activities and racing. Festival information and registration links can be found at www.GreatGlenTrails.com.\n\nWe also want to take this opportunity to let our customers and lodging partners know that during the Festival our trails on the western side of Route 16\, as well as the tubing hill\, will be closed to the general public. However\, we will be open for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing on the trails on the eastern side of the trail system. The Mt. Washington SnowCoaches will be operating daily\, and tours can be reserved online at www.SnowCoachNH.com\n\nA sincere “thank you” goes out to the Festival’s presenting sponsor\, The Valley Originals\, as well as a host of other regional and national sponsors including L.L. Bean\, Swix\, Nokian Tires\, The Glen House hotel\, Ragged Mountain Equipment\, Skida\, Living Shores Aquarium\, Settlers Green\, SkiErg\, Bolt Depot\, Northeast Delta Dental\, Bavarian Chocolate Haus\, Zeb’s Country Store\, Clif Bar\, Shaw’s Supermarkets\, Big Dave’s Bagels & Deli\, Town & Country Inn and Resort\, and the Law Offices of Cooper Cargill Chant.
