SUMMARY:Bicknell's Thrush Tours Early morning tours to see this rare bird
DESCRIPTION:Bicknell’s Thrush is an extremely rare species with very limited breeding grounds. It is the rarest and most secretive of the breeding thrushes in North America and it is the only bird whose breeding is restricted to the Northeastern part of the continent. They usually breed at higher elevations\, normally nesting above 3\,000 ft. The unique and harsh climate is just what the birds prefer due to the combination of low vegetation and abundant moisture. The Mt. Washington Auto Road offers you a rare opportunity to view these obscure birds. \nOur Bicknell’s Thrush Guided Tours leave early in the morning before the Mt. Washington Auto Road opens to the general public to insure there is as little additional noise or disturbance as possible. Our success rate at hearing and seeing this elusive thrush is quite good\, but with the species in decline due to wintering habitat losses\, there can be no guarantee of sightings. \nTours depart from the base of the Auto Road at 6:00am and last approximately 2 hours. Cost: $50 per person\, Advanced reservations required. \nContact the Mt. Washington Auto Road 603-466-3988 or visit www.mt-washington.com/events for more information

SUMMARY:Jackson Public Library - Highlights from a recent trip to the Russian Kamchatka peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Friends of the Jackson Public Library as locals Sam and Betsey Harding show us highlights from their recent trip to the Russian Kamchatka peninsula. \nSam and Betsey Harding took the trip of a lifetime last fall\, traveling to the far northeast Pacific coast of Siberia.  Their adventure stretched over 2000 miles on a converted Russian research vessel\, starting at the Arctic Circle and continuing south along the sparsely populated Bering Sea coast of the Kamchatka peninsula. \nTheir adventure included multiple daily Zodiac trips ashore to hike and explore the largely unspoiled natural beauty of the peninsula – hundreds of species of plants\, birds\, and marine and land animals – from the brilliant fall tundra foliage to the larch forests\, broad rivers\, and active volcanoes of the south. \nSam Harding taught Russian for 28 years at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville\, NJ.  During that time he traveled extensively throughout the Soviet Union and Russia.  In 2000 Sam and Betsey retired to Jackson and founded a nonprofit\, Friends of Russian Orphans\, supporting orphans and orphanages in the ancient Russian city of Yaroslavl.  Some of their extensive travels together include Lake Baikal in southern Siberia and the Trans-Siberian railroad from Beijing through Mongolia to Moscow. \nThis program is free and open to the public\, although a $5.00 donation is welcome to offset presenter expenses.  For more information\, please contact the Jackson Public Library at 603-383-9731.

SUMMARY:Sunrise Drives
DESCRIPTION:The Mt. Washington Auto Road opens early on three Sundays every summer\, allowing guests to drive themselves to the summit of Mount Washington to view the sunrise from the highest peak in the Northeast. \nDue to the popularity of these sunrise opportunities\, we recommend not waiting until the last minute to arrive as you may spend time waiting at the Toll House due to traffic. \nThe State Park building on the summit will be open with limited food service on all three of these mornings. \nGUIDED SUNRISE TOURS\nExperience a sunrise on Mt. Washington from the comfort of a Mt. Washington Stage Coach. \nOur experienced tour guides or “stage drivers” as we call them\, will drive you up the Mt. Washington Auto Road for a chance to watch the sun rise. We leave promptly from the base lodge and will not hold back the trip as we need to keep a tight schedule throughout the day for all our guests. \nOur drivers know the prime spots to view\, have access to safe “VIP” parking where other cars would not be able to park and will tell their tales on the ascent and descent. Even if we don’t actually get to the see the sun rise\, you can be sure the early morning lighting on the mountains will make for incredible and unforgettable scenes. Although you are riding in a heated van\, you should dress warm as you will have an opportunity to get out of the stage van for pictures and to experience the weather on Mt. Washington. Weather info can be found here and you are always welcome to call for the latest conditions. This tour may run over 2 hours depending on weather and where we watch the sunrise from. \n  \nBe sure to check for time and pricing.
